Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan and the Illinois Department of Revenue have announced charges against four gas station owners in the Chicago area for sales tax evasion. The alleged fraudulent adds up to more than $1 million in sales taxes among the four.
For several years now, the state has made a public show of force against sales tax evasion. Although gas station owners have often taken center stage, other businesses have been targeted, including restaurants, service industries, and doctors offices. As part of this continued push, Illinois’s General Assembly passed a law last year, which creates the crime of sales tax evasion and imposes penalties based on the amount of taxes evaded. The law went into effect on the first of this year.
To date, the crackdown on gas station sales tax evasion has recovered nearly $85 million to the state.
